The Sovereign

Neighborhood

The Sovereign is a vintage apartment community located in downtown Tacoma about ¼ mile south of historical Wright’s Park and Arboretum. It is located at 816 South 8th street, across the street from Neighbor’s Park which has a public garden space.

This is a historical residential neighborhood from 120 years ago. The Sovereign was built in 1908 and originally named the Malone apartments before later having the name changed to The Sovereign. The building includes a ground floor level plus 3 stories above having a total of 14 units. All units are large by today’s standards being 850 to 950 SF for the two bedroom units and near 1100 SF for the 3 bedroom units.

Building Interior

The building has a central secured entry into a lobby space where the mail boxes are located and a central stair leads to the upper floors. As was tradition in the early part of the 20th century, the laundry room is a shared common laundry area. The building was renovated in 2000 to provide modern electric, and some units are heated by its own unit’s central gas heaters and other units are heated by electric wall heaters. The Sovereign is craftsman style architecture reminiscent of the time era when it was constructed.
