McKellar

NEIGHBORHOOD

McKellar is one of the most desired vintage apartment communities in North Tacoma. Located in the North Slope historical district, it is only 1 mile from downtown Tacoma at 901 north M street in a historical residential neighborhood showcasing Victorian style homes from 100 years ago. Built in 1917, there are two buildings, one being a brick veneer building of 12 units, 3 stories tall, and one building of wood beveled siding having 12 units and 3 stories tall.

BUILDING INTERIORS

Both buildings have a central secured entry into a small lobby where the mail boxes are located and a central stair leads to the upper floors. As was tradition in the early part of the 20th century, the laundry room is a shared common laundry area. McKellar uses vintage hot water radiators still operating and working well after 100 years. Most units are around 500 square feet and many of the bathrooms have claw foot tubs. The buildings have craftsman style layout of rooms, and finishes with generous use of wood moldings and beamed ceiling. Many of the floors are the original hard wood floors, and many of the units have been upgraded with marble, stone and granite flooring and countertops in kitchens and bathrooms.
